Player Profile

Julian McKail

Julian McKail

A word whiz, naturally

Age: 30
Occupation: Party hire
Location: Melbourne

When did it all begin

Julian has worked in the party hire industry for almost a decade and he and his brother have their own business (McStructure). They hire out and erect their own marquee structure for big events.

He is also a highly talented pool player. He was always one of the top players in the region, although he is not so active lately. Recently,  he played in an interstate Scrabble tournament at Dimboola. He  left behind his treasured pool cue at the Dimboola Pub, but they were kind enough to send it back to him!

Julian is a big fan of books by Tom Robbins and enjoys quoting Oscar Wilde, whose turn of phrase he greatly admires. He also relishes solving cryptic crosswords, especially in the Saturday Age, along with the other word puzzles.

Julian has always been a valuable member of one sport team or another, including basketball and most recently indoor cricket, where he and his friends have had a great, fun time every week.

Team Australia 2004 Player profiles

Lovable larrikin

Julian loves to relax with a beer and some good company, or have a casual hit of golf with friends. He enjoys playing Scrabble online, including many marathon sessions on the Internet Scrabble Club (often late at night, as he is rather nocturnal).

For the last five years, Julian has visited Thailand mid-year. It is a country he adores and which he finds "such an adventure". He loves the culture and is one of only a few tourists who can have a conversation with the locals in their own tongue.

Julian usually finishes in the top five at Masters tournaments, has won one (Essendon a couple of years ago). Iin his first attempt at the National Championships this year, he narrowly missed out on a top ten finish. He rarely studies words. He is a true natural at the game and an absolute whiz at anagramming. Through experience, he has gained a finely-tuned strategic instinct.

Julian is immensely proud to be representing Australia in the game that he loves so dearly. Playing in the TransTasman Challenge is his biggest achievement since he began playing competitively in 2000.
