Pairing methods for long tournaments

Within Australia the AUPAIR program has done a good job in getting good pairings for tournaments of 7 or fewer rounds. The Australian draw has been described as King of the Hill without repeats.
But in longer tournaments the desideratum of no repeats means that at some stage the top player is reaching way down the field to find an opponent and this may be not a worthy match (we judge so on the basis of win records rather than prior rating). So the solution that has been used for many years is the notion of a reset. For instance in a 24 round tournament we may have a reset of all players after round 12, permitting rematches of opponents who had been played in rounds 1 to 12. It is debatable whether to have 2 or 3 resets, and in which round.
It has been usually thought that meeting a player for a second time is acceptable in a long tournament, but a third or fourth time may be undesirable.
The 2022 CASPA AGM established a committee to find recommendations for pairings for the Australian Championship. This committee is chaired by Paul Richards paulrrichards7@gmail.com Other members are Carol Johnsen, Martin Waterworth, Victor Tung and Barry Harridge.
This web page is some exploratory data prepared by Barry Harridge. The Victorian Championship will trial a new algorithm, the Tight Australian.
The mechanism of a reset is not the only solution. There is no such notion in Chew pairings for instance which is used overseas with the tsh program.

Metrics for pairing methods

The following displays for a few tournaments try to get a handle on aspects of runaway streaks, rematches and mismatches. For each tournament there is a graphic showing how the top 8 players got to their final rankings by a path of ups and downs of wins and losses. When a player gets somewhat ahead it is good to have a respectable challenger.
The usual mechanism of a reset is inflexible. Barry's proposal is that instead of a reset of the whole field, allowing repeats is determined per player. Whenever the gap between the win records of a player and his or her potential opponent is 1 or more, the pairing should be rethought to allow a rematch.
The rethink is more likely to happen at the top and the bottom of the field. I expect that the consequence is that some players near the top and the bottom may have repeats and even threepeats. Players in the middle of the field will have fewer repeats and rarely a threepeat.
Under the graphic is a table showing Dupes, the number of pairings which are repeats in that round. It also shows Bads, the number of pairings where the better player is 2 or more wins ahead of his opponent. A bad pairing cannot always be avoided when there is no better pairing available.
If you click on the details tab you can see who is involved in pairings of concern. For instance in the excerpt here, the worrisome details for Chris May have repeats in pink, occasions when he was paired with a rather inferior player in green, and a rather superior player in blue, eg he played Bob Jackman twice, he played Edward Okulicz when he was three wins better than him in round 19, and he played Peter Kougi when he was three wins lower than Peter in round 15.

The last example is a tournament from India in 2011 which used Chew pairings which should do an excellent job in making tighter pairings towards the end at the expense of higher order repeats eg threepeats and even fourpeats.
