SCRABBLE FOR SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN
Scrabble is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn a range of skills. Literacy and numeracy skills are at the core of Scrabble, but the game provides opportunity for young people to develop several other skills including:- Problem Solving
- Time Management
- Strategic Thinking
- Resilience & Perserverance
In addition to this, children who participate in Scrabble clubs are able to meet others who have similar interests to them and develop social skills.
Every year, CASPA runs the Australian Youth Scrabble Championship. Whilst this is a hard fought competition, it is also an event that is friendly for beginner players and a chance for young people to connect with like minded peers from around the nation. As of July 2025, there are approximately 90 youth tournament players in Australia. There are currently dedicated youth Scrabble programs in Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra. For any enquiries about these or for support in starting a Youth Scrabble initiative in your area, please contact the CASPA Youth Coordinator John Hamilton.
Whilst not compulsory, we encourage all youth Scrabble players to become members of their local state association. There are many benefits for youth members including:
- 50% discount off the members rate to all rated tournaments in Australia
- Subscription to Across the Board, a quarterly magazine for Scrabble in Australia
- Access to world class coaching from the Australian Youth Coach Karen Richards
- Eligibility for selection in representative events including the World Youth Scrabble Championship.
In 2024, the first youth Scrabble Championship was held in Sydney. See report.
In 2025, the 2025 Youth Championship was held in Sydney.
